Carol Scott, Chief Executive 

Profile Update: March 2024

Carol Scott is a Graduate of the University of Tasmania and the Australian Maritime College, having worked as a Vessel Operations Manager, Resource Manager, Fisheries Extension Officer, a Technical Officer and former Women in Seafood Australasia (WISA) Director.

Carol has 40 years’ experience in the commercial fishing industry in both Australia and New Zealand and is the Chief Executive for Southern Inshore Fisheries Management Company Limited based in Nelson. The Company represents the interests and rights of commercial fisheries quota owners for a number of inshore finfish stocks throughout the South Island and Taranaki regions.

Such a role requires knowledge and skills across a number of topics and issues that may impact on commercial fisheries from fisheries management and research, quota setting limits, deemed values, cost recovery, environmental and ecosystem management, marine spatial planning, biosecurity, and including any other issues that may apply.

Carol is a member of a number of technical and community-based working groups. These include marine protection forums, fisheries science working groups, fisheries specific management forums and a regional council biodiversity forum. In addition to these groups Carol was also a past executive committee member for the NZ Federation of Commercial Fishermen, Secretary (and Past President) to the Port Nelson Fishermen’s Association, Executive Secretary to the NZ Tuna Management Association and ministerial appointment to the Blue Cod Management Group and inaugural Kaikoura Marine Guardians.

In 2018 Carol was awarded the Electronic Navigation Ltd Shield for services to fishers and in 2021 the Seafood New Zealand Longstanding Service Award.
